Why is our city the best in breed for small businesses and start ups?

The internet has breathed new life into our city. Today it's best in breed for small businesses and start ups, particularly the online sector. But what makes it so great? Why is the Brighton & Hove business landscape so exciting and fertile?

There's the beach for a start. The sea is hard to beat at lunchtime whether it's chucking it down or blinding you with sunshine. Brighton's close enough to London for rock 'n' roll... but far enough away to be as chilled as you want it to be. The night life blows your socks off. There's so many fantastic restaurants you can eat somewhere different every weekend for years. And (surely) there's more hairdressers per head of population than anywhere else.

Keep your 'passion' to yourself. This is business!

Sometimes I think if I hear one more person say they're passionate about what they do, I'll throw up. It must be one of the single most over-used and worn out ways on the planet to describe how you feel about your work.

As it turns out, I'm not the only one. Business experts agree that approaching a small business or start up with undiluted passion isn't always the best idea. It can end in tears, especially when your shiny-eyed zeal closes the door on reality. Falling in love can cloud your judgement just as badly in a business context as a personal one.
